Uche Ewelukwa

Professor Uche Ewelukwa, a University of Arkansas School of Law Professor is the winner of the 2009 Human Rights Essay Award. The theme for the essay competition was, “60 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: its contemporary normative impact.” Ewelukwa’s paper, “The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the African Child Today: Progress or Problems?” asks if the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) has been beneficial to African children or if it has proved harmful. Her essay reviewed the extent to which children are protected in the constitutions of countries in Africa, discussed the influence of the UDHR on constitution-making and the development of human rights ideals in the continent, and analyzed relevant judicial decisions emanating from some of the highest courts in the continent, including the Constitutional Court of South Africa, the Supreme Court of Nigeria, and the Supreme Court of Zimbabwe. Ndidi Onukwulu

Ndidi Onukwulu is a singer originally from Burns Lake, British Columbia. Although her style is often classified as jazz and blues, Onukwulu combines several musical genres in her songs including surf music, electric blues, gospel, and country. Onukwulu, whose father, jazz player Ezeadi Onukwulu , is from Nigeria, also integrates Malagasy and Nigerian music into her performances to create a unique and eclectic sound. She frequently tours promoting her music and makes regular appearances at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival. In January 2006 Onukwulu released her first album No, I Never. The album release was followed by a tour that garnered positive buzz in the Canadian blues community. Ifeanyi Chijindu

Ifeanyi Chijindu is a Nigerian-American author/writer, entrepreneur, artist, model, actress and screenwriter. Ifeanyi who was born in Los Angeles, Ca. had her first poem published at the age of eight, she completed a 90-page novella at eleven and at 15, Ifeanyi sold her first short story and won 2nd place for it in a contest hosted by Superior Communications and Publications. By 17, Ifeanyi regularly performed her poetry at paid venues. Around this same time, Ifeanyi also deepened her interest in acting and won the part of Maya Angelou in a local play called Women In Love. King Onyeama of Eke

The King of Agbaja, Onyeama n’Eke was the greatest king in northern Igboland. He was probably the greatest Igbo king in living memory. From his palace in Eke, Onyeama reigned over the entire Agbaja, from Oji River though Udi and Ezeagu to the present-day political capital of Igboland, Enugu, and even Nkanu and Ogui communities. Onyeama was born circa 1870s, the youngest of the ten children of Özö Omulu Onwusi, a polygamous titled man of means, and an only son of his mother – Chinazungwa Ijeonyeabo of nearby Ebe community. Brought up by his half-brother, Amadiezeoha Nwankwo-Onwusi, Onyeama worked hard and made his mark in business. Rochelle Okoye

Rochelle Okoye, was Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba May 26, 1985. Okoye, moved to England in 1992, at the age of 7, and continued gymnastics in that area. In 1996, Okoye became the British national gymnastics champion and was able to hold the title for three consecutive years. In 1997 and 1998, Okoye was awarded the top sports person in England under the age of 13 category. Than in 1998 BBC produced and aired a 1/2 hour sports documentary on her gymnastics career. Joshua Uzoigwe

Joshua Uzoigwe (July 1, 1946 – October 2005) was a Nigerian composer and ethnomusicologist. He was born in Umuahia, Abia State (formerly Imo State), Nigeria. A member of the Igbo ethnic group, many of his works draw on the traditional music of that people. He had his early musical training at the King’s College, Lagos, and the International School, Ibadan. He received advanced training at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (1970-1973), Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London (1973-1977). He attended Queen's University, Belfast, attaining both an M.A. and a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology. Uzoigwe’s compositional outputs were not as extensive as Ayo Bankole and Akin Euba, but they were some of the most finest music ever written in twentieth century Nigeria. He composed for chamber and orchestra, but he was more famous for his tuneful solo songs and brilliant virtuosic piano pieces.

Uzodinma Iweala (born November 5, 1982) is an author who hails from Washington, DC and Nigeria. His debut novel, Beasts of No Nation, is a formation of his thesis work at Harvard. It depicts a child soldier in an unnamed African country. The book, published in 2005, has received considerable critical acclaim from sources like Time Magazine, The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, The Times, and Rolling Stone. The son of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Iweala attended St. Albans School in Washington D.C. and is a recent graduate of Harvard College. Emmanuel Chukwudi Eze

Emmanuel Chukwudi Eze (1963-2007) was a philosopher. Eze was a specialist in postcolonial philosophy. He wrote as well as edited influential postcolonial histories of philosophy in Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Influences in his own work include Paulin Hountondji, Richard Rorty, David Hume, and Immanuel Kant. Eze was most recently Associate Professor of Philosophy at DePaul University, where he also edited the journal Philosophia Africana. He died December 30, 2007 after a short illness. Eze was educated by Jesuits in colleges in Benin City, Nigeria and Kimwenza, Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo). He attended St. Patrick’s Elementary School in Iheakpu-Awka from 1970 to 1976. Chris Oti (born in London on 16 June 1965) was a winger of prodigious pace who represented England on thirteen occasions between 1988 to 1991. He was a member of the England squad that appeared in the 1991 Rugby World Cup during which he made two appearances. Maria Louisa Bustill Robeson (November 8, 1853 – January 20, 1904) was a Quaker schoolteacher; the mother of Paul Robeson ; and the wife of the Reverend William Drew Robeson of Witherspoon Church in Princeton, New Jersey. She was born in 1853 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Charles Hicks Bustill (1816-1890) and Emily Robinson (c1815-before 1860). Ifi Amadiume

Dr. Ifi Amadiume (born 23 April 1947) is a Nigerian poet, anthropologist and essayist. She joined the Religion Department of Dartmouth College, New Hampshire, U.S. in 1993. She is currently the Professor and Chair of African and African-American Studies at Dartmouth. Born in Kaduna to Igbo parents, Amadiume was educated in Nigeria before moving to Britain in 1971. She studied at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, gaining a BA (1978) and PhD (1983) in social anthropology. Her fieldwork in Africa resulted in two ethnographic monographs relating to the Igbo - African Matriarchal Foundations (1987), and the award-winning Male Daughters Female Husbands (Zed Press, 1987). Chika Unigwe is a Nigerian-born author. She has a Ph.D in Literature from the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. Her debut novel, De Feniks was published in 2005 by Meulenhoff and Manteau (of Amsterdam and Antwerp) and was shortlisted for the Vrouw en Kultuur debuutprijs for the best first novel by a female writer. John Munonye

John Munonye (born April 1929) is an important important Igbo writer and one of the most important Nigerian writers of the twentieth of century. He was born in Akokwa, Nigeria, and was educated at the University of Ibadan and the Institute of Education, London. He retired as the head of the Advanced Teacher Training College, Owerri. John Munonye, unlike some of his contemporaries professed a love for optimism in the face of colonial onslaught on traditional values. Born in Ogidi, Eastern Nigeria, in 1966, Newton Aduaka moved to Lagos in 1970 after the Biafran War, and then to England in 1985. Nneka Ogwumike

One to watch Nneka Ogwumike (born July 2, 1990) is a basketball player at Stanford University. She is 6 foot 2 and plays the power forward position. She attended Cypress Fairbanks High School and led them to a 5A State Championship in her senior season. Ogwumike chose Stanford over Baylor, Duke, Connecticut, Tennessee and Notre Dame. She was a member of USA Under 18 Team that won gold in Argentina on July 23-27, 2008. Nneka tallied 20 points and 15 rebounds in the championship game of the Under 18 Fiba Americas. She led team USA to a 5-0 undefeated record while leading the team in scoring and rebounding. She was named MVP of this tournament in Argentina. Nneka has a sister, Chiney, who is a 6 foot 3 high school basketball player.

Justin is everyone’s favourite ‘funny actor’ who started out recording hilarious street-based vox pops on YouTube under the banner of Hot Topic. He is one half of JcX n Slick, the other half being Nicholas Brown. His unique brand of humour has been performed at the Choice FM Comedy Club, the Catford Theatre, Fairfield Halls, The Jump Off and Kojo’s Comedy Funhouse. He also had slots on Richard Blackwood ’s Choice FM show and Tim Westwood’s Radio 1 show . The pair can also be seen on their popular show Hot Topic, which tours the country asking the viewing public their opinions on various current issues. He also appears on Sky digital’s Current TV.
